EARLIER NEWS
2018 July 4 Just in time for America's annual fireworks fest, my newest zine has hit the bookstores. Why We Vote gives you the tools you need to choose your candidates and plan for Election Day. It busts some common myths about voting and reminds us that every vote counts – especially yours. June 30 And now for something a bit different from my usual. My poem, "Drought," has just been published in the Watchung Review. The theme for this issue is Dismantling Inequality Through Dialogues Of Conscience. The entire issue is available online. 2017 October 4 My newest short story, Notes for a Porno Set in the Vatican, was published today at CutBank lit magazine's 2017 "All Accounts and Mixture" feature. It's LGBTQ-friendly and (as the title suggests) a bit NSFW. Enjoy! June 6 We've done something new and different this week at GuerrillaReads. I traveled to San Diego for the International Communications Association conference, where great minds from around the world met to share ideas about "all aspects of human and mediated communication." We heard from four professors from Europe, South America, Africa and the US talking about their work. Watch their videos now. April 1 The litfest video walk was a blast! We had a lively tribute to the late poet Tatiana de la Tierra, an excerpt from a memoir in progress, poetry, and a surprise visit from Marga Gomez herself. Watch all the videos now. March 12 Join me at on the Silverlake corner where A Different Light Bookstore once stood, for the GuerrillaReads Lambda LitFest Video Walk. We'll explore the LGBTQ and literary history of the neighborhood, and you'll have a chance to read your own work for GuerrillaReads. More info here. 2016 September 2 During my artist residency at Mesa Verde National Park I will hold a free writing workshop combined with a reading from my own work. It's scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16 at Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum. Everyone is welcome; no prior writing experience required. July 12 To celebrate my upcoming residency at Mesa Verde National Park and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service, I'm organizing a #ParkLit Hashtag Book Festival to take place on Saturday, August 20. You are invited to participate - click here for details. June 1 I'm delighted to announce that I've been selected to be an Artist in Residence at Mesa Verde National Park. While I'm in residence I will hold a writing workshop in the park. Check back soon for details. January 28 GuerrillaReads, the online video literary magazine I launched in 2008, was profiled today in The Atlantic. The article by Katharine Schwab is about literary efforts around the world take literature to the streets. I'm thrilled to be included! |

Nov 29 Come by Vista Hermosa Park near downtown LA on Sunday, Dec 6 at 2 pm to hear four local writers (including me!) reading stories about The End of Water.
June 21 Join me next Saturday afternoon, June 27, for the launch of issue 3 of Literature for Life, a fantastic lit journal designed to bring writing to young people in LA schools that resonates with their real lives. My story, Burners, is featured in the upcoming issue. Click here for all the details.
May 23 Yes, I'm headed to the City of the Big Shoulders, Chicago. Wed, June 3 is Reading Under the Influence, the popular reading and trivia series that just had its 10th birthday. Then on Sat, June 6 I'll be reading from my novel at indie favorite City Lit Books, in historic Logan Square. If you're in town, I'd love to see you.
I'm also cooking up an indie bookstores bike tour while I'm there, which I'll tweet along the way. More details to come! Update: check out the tweet tour here.

December 2 I'll be reading alongside Janet Fitch, Conrad Romo and others on Sunday, Dec 7 as part of a fundraiser for Literature for Life, a fabulous new online magazine that provides a curriculum guide for teachers alongside every piece it publishes. There will also be gelato and wine pairings from Leo Bulgarini and red beans and rice from Jonathan Gold himself.
November 14 It was nice to see my novel get a mention at the book blog of the Charlotte Observer's own Dannye Romine Powell. She does include a mention of my claim to journalism fame: I was a copy carrier at the Observer while in high school.
September 1 Save the date! I'll be reading again at this year's LitCrawl in North Hollywood on Wed, October 22. Another great Los Angeles literary tradition is in its second year and going strong. (I love literary LA!)
August 23 The book launch party for Love Songs of the Revolution was a grand success! Live music, delicious Lithuanian food, a big crowd and every book was sold. Check out the pics on my blog.
July 25 Join me on Saturday, August 23 as we launch Love Songs of the Revolution at the downtown Los Angeles Central Library. It's a perfect day for the event, as it's the 25th anniversary of the Baltic Way, a massive independence demonstration that stretched across three countries, and serves as a major turning point in my novel. We'll have live music and Lithuanian snacks, and Skylight Books will be on hand with copies of the book to sell. Hope to see you there!
August 6 Another good book review for Love Songs of the Revolution. This one appears in The Baltic Times, an English-language newspaper headquartered in Tallinn, Estonia, that covers the entire Baltic region.
July 14 I'm very excited to announce my very short story, "The Preaching Game," was published today on the Akashic Books web series, Mondays are Murder. It's 750 words of noir based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Read it now.
June 3 I've just read possibly the best book review ever, of Love Songs of the Revolution. It's written by author KC Kirkley, and appears on Curbside Splendor. The word "genius" even makes an appearance.
May 19 Love Songs of the Revolution is has hit the shelves!
Feb 19 This just in! Check out the stunning cover by artist Ryan Bradley for my novel, Love Songs of the Revolution. It'll hit the shelves in May.
